Many materials can be added to the water to reduce both the
hydration temperature as well as the freezing temperature. Methanol or one of
the glycols is applied usually monoethylene glycol. The economics of Methanol recovery
system may not be favorable in all cases. The prevention of hydrates
with methanol and or glycols can incur certain high costs due to the high
dosage. High concentrations of these solvents aggravate potential problems with
the scales in that the solubility of these in the water is reduced and most of
the scale inhibitors are precipitated. This in the liquid phase of the water
achieving the required depression of the hydration temperature. The amount that
will also be distributed in the gas phase and the other phases of the
hydrocarbons.
